This is based on a historical novel on how the two sisters, Anne (Natalie Portman) and Mary Boleyn (Scarlett Johansson), contend for the affection of King Edward V111 (Eric Bana).

Both the Boleyn girls were remarkable beauties, and though Mary was already married, King Henry VIII still took an interest in her. Despite being a favourite lady-in-waiting to his wife, Queen Catherine, Mary became the king's mistress and became pregnant with the King's child. She gave birth to two children, Catherine and Henry. However, while she was pregnant, the scheming Anne set out to seduce the king and steal him away from her sister. She was successful, and the King flirted with Anne by day and slept with Mary by night. In the process he broke the heart of Mary, who had by now fallen in love with him.

By 1527, Henry has made up his mind to divorce his wife and marry Anne. Mary was pushed into the background and became the other Boleyn girl. She was reduced to being Anne's lady-in-waiting. As an act of malice, Anne secretly adopted Mary's son, stealing all legal rights as the child's mother. She became consumed by her ambition to be the Queen.

Meanwhile, Mary's brother George was trapped in a miserable marriage to Jane Parker and was seeking solace in a secret homosexual affair with Sir Francis Weston. After Anne gave birth to a daughter, Elizabeth in 1533, she suffered two miscarriages, being forced to abort one with a witches' potion. When Mary returned to court in 1535, she began to suspect that the King was impotent and so Anne and George committed an incestuous affair in order to help her conceive again. Her fears were seemingly confirmed when Anne had another miscarriage in 1536 and the fetus was monstrously deformed.

In the end, Anne was arrested and so was George. Both of them were executed.
